what up.
Checked out your beats. For the most part, you seem to have the beginnings of what I call a diggers ear. You hear sounds well. But heres the problem: your drum programming
Pretty much in each song, except perhaps for Ghetto, you rely on some sort of stutter kick pattern. Moreover, you seem to forfeit the representation of a snare sound. Thats crucial because the kick & the snare representation is one of the most important elements of the boom bap sound.
As for the smooth part, again, your drum programming bounces far too much. For instance, in your beat unh, the sample is soulful and smooth. But the drum sounds and programming are really mechanical.
The one thing that I suggest that you do ABOVE ALL is to listen and study rhythm breaks as much as possible. The era you wanna check out is between 1967-1975. Check for American funk & Soul records, Afro-Cuban, etc.
The thing you want to study is how simple drum patterns are used to develop strong rhythms. And this is what you want to do: match up simple 2 & 4 snares with steady kicks in simple patterns. Patterns that better handle the sounds that you slide in over the top.
